The University of Michigan-Flint has secured a $30 million commitment from the Michigan legislature to support the development of an innovation and technology complex. The funding will be utilized to construct a new building north of the university’s William S. White Building. The first phase of the project, approved by the University of Michigan Board of Regents, involves a 14,000-square-foot building costing $10 million. This phase will house state-of-the-art instructional laboratories, collaborative spaces, and interdisciplinary research areas, with funding coming from grants from the U.S. Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration, The Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, and UM-Flint gifts and resources. The second phase, estimated at $40 million and comprising around 50,000 square feet, will be located adjacent to the first phase, and the state’s $30 million allocation will contribute to its construction. The project, initiated in October 2022, addresses the growing needs of UM-Flint’s College of Innovation & Technology (CIT), established during the pandemic to meet the demand for education in technology-related fields.
