YPSILANTI — Eastern Michigan University’s “factory of the future” program is equipping mechanical engineering students with in-demand skills in robotics, computer vision, and advanced manufacturing, helping them secure jobs and meet growing industry needs.
Developed by EMU’s GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology in partnership with Michigan-based Coherix, the program focuses on precision manufacturing applications within the rapidly evolving field of adhesive-dispensing systems. Since launching in 2023, 49 senior mechanical engineering students have participated, and a growing number have secured employment through the program.
“This program provides students with real-world, hands-on experience that directly translates into career opportunities,” said Emad Tanbour, associate professor at EMU and program manager. “It bridges the gap between classroom learning and industry application in a way that is rarely available in traditional academic settings.”
Participation continues to expand, with approximately 80% of EMU’s senior mechanical engineering students engaged in the program, proving strong student interest and industry relevance.
Students gain specialized experience in 3D computer vision applications for industrial robotics, robotic dispensing of industrial adhesives, and AI-driven diagnostics for manufacturing processes. The program also emphasizes hands-on robotic programming, a skill increasingly critical across advanced manufacturing sectors.
“Our program with Coherix is the only one of its kind to offer students experience in programming and operating industrial robots used in manufacturing,” said Mohamad Qatu, dean of the GameAbove College of Engineering and Technology. “This type of hands-on training positions our students for immediate success in the workforce.”
