Battery manufacturing has always reminded me of cake baking. In both cases, you take some materials, mix them together, spread the mixture, and put it in an oven. Just like in cake baking, two people can follow the same recipe and produce completely different results. Your cake might turn out better than mine, even with identical ingredients and instructions.
For many decades, battery manufacturing has operated this way. It’s been highly experience-driven. Industry leaders have optimized their processes through years of trial and error, refining techniques based on what they’ve learned on the factory floor. But as I’ve watched the industry evolve, particularly over the last few years, I’ve seen this traditional approach reach its limits.
The experiences companies created over the last 20 years in improving manufacturing simply don’t scale very well anymore. And that’s creating an urgent challenge for the entire industry.
